My wife and I had our baby here, and it was an excellent experience. It was our first kid, so I have no frame of reference. It's entirely possible that some of the following things are common, but I appreciated them nonetheless.
After the delivery, our baby boy was healthy so he stayed with us for the entire rest of our stay. We were moved a few hours later to a different room where we both had beds, and our baby was in a bassinet between our beds. Over the next day, we were constantly checked on (in a non-annoying manner) and provided guidance for how to take care of ourselves and the new baby. It was really great, and we left the hospital feeling confident.
Other random tip: They have a little room where dads-to-be can go to get food and drinks. It doesn't have an overwhelmingly excellent selection, but it gets you food and drink in the wee hours of the morning when you're delirious. Oh, and it's free.
We had pre-registered and called ahead to alert them that we'd be in sometime soon, so when we showed up just before midnight it was relatively simple. Keep in mind I'm dealing with a woman in labor, so every thing that I had to do was exponentially more difficult. They buzzed us in and we went to the nurse's station. We spent a few minutes there before being taken to our delivery room. Once there, our nurse Lydia joined us and didn't really leave for the next 7 hours. She was great; very knowledgeable and helpful, and she took charge in a helpful manner.
I'd say that we'll definitely come back, but that seems weird in this instance. But if we have another baby in San Diego, we'll likely come here again.
